Because search terms, or keywords and keyword phrases, are important to search engine optimization, many people think the goal of SEO writing is to incorporate keywords into website content.  While keyword integration is important to SEO writing, it is not the goal. SEO writing has more important goals.

Goal 1: Help people find the website.
The first goal of SEO writing is to help web searchers find your website.  Your website should rank high enough to appear in the first few pages of search results. Pages one and two are ideal.

Goal 2: Satisfy the need for information.
SEO writing also must consider the human need for information.  Web searchers must feel that the link to the website is worthy of clicking, because the website might provide the information they are looking for.

Goal 3: Deliver the intended message.
SEO writing must deliver the intended message. Search engine optimization should not distract from what the website’s content is meant to accomplish. It should not bury the message or lessen its appeal.

Goal 4: Inspire action.
Finally, SEO writing should inspire action. The content should encourage the reader to click through to the next page, request more information or place an order. It should accomplish the marketing and communications goals.

As such, SEO writing should take into account people first and search engines second.
